How Dilara Zaman Stays Fit Even at 84

When the doorbell rang, legendary actress Dilara Zaman greeted us with a warm smile and welcomed us into her home. As soon as we entered, she asked in her affectionate tone, “Have you eaten?”—a question she extends not only to guests but also to her shooting crew, treating everyone like family.

On June 19, she turned 84 years old. Many wonder how she remains so fit and energetic at this age. To find out, the Noksha team spent a full day with her at her Uttara residence.

Her Daily Morning Routine

If she doesn’t have a shooting schedule, Dilara Zaman wakes up at dawn for Fajr prayer. After resting until 8 AM, her day begins by picking up the morning newspaper from the doorstep. She enjoys reading the paper while having breakfast.

For the past 43 years, she has lived with diabetes and takes insulin regularly. Her breakfast usually includes one handmade wheat roti, a bowl of vegetables, and a seasonal fruit. After eating, she watches the morning news on different TV channels.

She shared, “I live alone most of the time. Even my son isn’t always at home. That’s why I keep the TV on—it feels like I’m surrounded by people.”

Family and Food Habits

Both her daughters live abroad—one in Canada and the other in the United States. At home, she stays with a foster son she raised since childhood. Despite her age, she still cooks her own meals and eats with discipline.

For lunch, she has a small cup of rice, vegetables, and fish—especially small fish, which she loves. Afterward, she relaxes while watching TV or rehearses scripts for her plays.

Evening Walks and Social Life

Right in front of her house is a big park. Every day at 4 PM, she goes for a walk. Over time, the strangers she met there have now become close friends.

She said, “They are my family now. If there’s something delicious cooked at their homes, they bring me some. When fruits ripen in their rooftop gardens, they share them with me too.”

Evening walks are also a time for fun chats and laughter. Sometimes, she enjoys street food like fuchka and jhalmuri with her friends. After walking for an hour, she returns home for tea and biscuits.

Dinner and Night Routine

By 9 PM, she finishes dinner, which is similar to lunch—roti and vegetables—but instead of fish, she has chicken. Before bed, she watches talk shows on TV, which she enjoys as much as reading newspapers. “You could say I’m addicted to news,” she laughed.

Inspiration from Japan

When her younger daughter went to Japan on a Monbusho scholarship, Dilara stayed with her for a while. That experience changed her outlook on life.

“In Japan, even at 80 or 90 years old, people manage everything by themselves—working in shops, gardening, grocery shopping. Age doesn’t stop them. They are calm, humble, and that’s why they live long.”

Clearly, Japanese lifestyle influenced her own discipline, independence, and positivity.

Life Philosophy

Dilara Zaman, who started her acting career in 1965, has seen six decades of changes in theater and television. She never complains; instead, she embraces every change with positivity.

Though her daughters want her to move abroad, she chooses to stay in Bangladesh. “When I go out walking, people show me so much love. They stop their rickshaws and cars to take photos with me. What could be more beautiful than this?”

The Secret Behind Her Youthful Energy

Even at 84, Dilara Zaman does everything on her own—cooking, walking, rehearsing, managing her household—without showing a trace of exhaustion. Her secret lies in her disciplined lifestyle, healthy diet, daily walking, love for news, and positive mindset.

Her liveliness, confidence, and simplicity prove that age is just a number, and she continues to inspire even the younger generation.
